Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s Pathfinder 1 has spent the past year making test flights over the Bay Area, drawing jokes and speculation on Reddit before making its first landing away from its Mountain View base this week.
Pathfinder 1 first launched in December 2024, when the massive, 400-foot, rigid helium airship was beginning to draw attention with its test flights over San Francisco, as SFist reported at the time. Since then, Brin’s startup LTA ("lighter-than-air") Research has continued testing the prototype over the Bay Area, culminating in this week’s first landing away from its Mountain View base, according to Monterey’s KSBW.
Residents have been sharing sightings of the aircraft on Reddit over the past year, where its enormous size has inspired references to “sky dildos” and male enhancement medication. Some have marveled at the unusual sight, while others have noted the dystopian aspect of the flights, questioning the extravagance of a billionaire-backed experiment that makes its way across local skies — amid a helium shortage.
One Redditor took a more pointed view of the project, writing, “I’m so glad that billionaires have a lower tax rate than I do. I’d hate to think they wouldn’t be able to afford a rigid-frame airship and fly it around the Bay Area so we can all look up and be reminded of the fact that they are billionaires amongst us.”
The airship made its way farther down the coast Tuesday, flying south along Monterey Bay from Moffett Federal Airfield, the company’s home base in Mountain View, to Salinas Municipal Airport, as KSBW reports. The trip reportedly marked Pathfinder 1’s first landing away from Moffett and the longest stretch its crew has flown over open water.
The coastal trip exposed the aircraft to changing weather conditions, which the crew monitored while collecting test data.
According to LTA Research's website, the company plans to use data gathered during Pathfinder 1’s test flights to guide the next generation of airships at its facility in Akron, Ohio, “the heart” of lighter-than-air innovation in the US.
Per KSBW, LTA Research hopes to eventually develop airships for cargo transport and humanitarian relief, though the aircraft remains an experimental prototype.
